What is an engagement letter?

An engagement letter is a written agreement between an accounting firm and its client setting out the scope of work, responsibilities, fees and timeline.

A good engagement letter says exactly which services are included (for example, a 2026 federal and state individual return), what is not included, what the client must provide and by when, how fees are set and billed, and how the engagement ends.

It protects both sides. Clients know what they are paying for, and the firm has a clear basis for billing extra when a request falls outside the agreed scope. Many firms issue a new letter every year for recurring tax work, so the terms stay current.

Professional standards and insurers often expect a signed letter on file before work starts. Keep the signed copy with the client's records.
